A jazz version of an e-bay auction!

... music history for sale ...

There was Charlie Parker's King alto saxophone ... with mother-of-pearl keys ... that was his primary horn in the 1950s. There was Benny Goodman's clarinet, John Coltrane's soprano and tenor saxophones, Gerry Mulligan's baritone. Thelonious Monk's tailored jacket. A ribald 27-page letter from Louis Armstrong to his manager.

All were auctioned at a noteworthy jazz auction earlier this year in New York.

... read how Chaquico dreamed up Midnight Noon ...

Midnight Noon ... the latest from
guitarist Craig Chaquico.

Guitarist Craig Chaquico named his latest release, Midnight Noon, after the term "jazz noon," which means midnight. He explains, "Even outside of the music world -- and with so many technological advances -- a lot of people don't really get inspired and start working until midnight, and a nine-to-five working day doesn't always seem to matter as much. At least in the art and music world, so much gets going and is inspired just after midnight when it's quiet, peaceful and uninterrupted -- and it's always just after midnight somewhere in the world."

Chaquico's single Dream Date, from Midnight Noon, is going for radio adds ... so listen for more spins on 103.1 WLOQ.

3D ... the latest from guitarist Steve Oliver.
Another guitarist, Steve Oliver, is also going for adds for his single, Wings of Spring, from his latest release, 3D.

Watch the jazzinorlando.com calendar for an upcoming Orlando concert date for Steve Oliver!

A formerly fabulous venue closes!

... sadly, the Jazz Company's demise is no surprise ...

Sign of the times ... a hint of the future of the came when a sign reading simply "Live Music" replaced the original venue sign (above) in 2002.

It's been a long time coming ... a slow, painful death. But, finally, the Pleasure Island Jazz Company is closed. According to a club manager, the last night of operation was Wednesday, December 21st. So, with no fanfare or adieux, a formerly fabulous jazz venue is gone.

Reportedly, as predicted for years, the room will reopen with an Irish Pub theme.

It was hard work, and it took Disney's upper-management a couple of years to force the demise of the Jazz Company. They were finally able to do so by booking almost exclusively solo acts (good solo acts, but solo none the less) instead of groups, and by changing their booking practices to eliminate almost all national music talent as well as many of the best Orlando-based musicians, but they finally made their prediction come true.

There's a Disney slogan about making dreams come true. In this case, all they made come true was their own prediction. In the process, they ended the dreams of many jazz listeners and musicians.

Sorry Mickey, upper-management's hard work to end an era is no accomplishment, and congratulations are not in order.

What's a rock band doing on a jazz site?!
... we're recommending you give them a listen ...

Los Lonley Boys after their Grammy Award win for Heaven.Congratulations Los Lonely Boys on their 2005 Grammy Award win for Heaven in the category Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal!

Check out Los Lonley Boys Florida dates!

If your musical tastes lean toward rock when listening to something other than jazz, you may already know about Los Lonely Boys (LLB). If not, you probably will soon! Here’s a short introduction.

This pre-nominations article from November, 2004 is held-over in honor of Los Lonely Boys' multiple 2005 Grammy Award nominations and Grammy win for "Heaven" in the category Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.

Made up of three brothers, Los Lonely Boys (LLB), a Texican band out of Austin, mixes it up with a memory of Stevie Ray Vaughn, a lotta Santana-style guitar work, and a little boost from a fellow Texan, Willie Nelson.

Add in the almost always present three-part vocals that says they’ve been doin’ this their whole lives, and you’ve got a new sensation.

The Garza brothers range in age from 21 to 25. Appropriately enough, youngest brother Ringo plays drums. Middle brother JoJo plays award winning bass, and eldest brother Henry is without a doubt one of the best guitar players ever heard at jazzinorlando.com.

Their current release, Los Lonely Boys, a self-titled CD, is accompanied on the shelves by a DVD recorded live in Austin where the band picked up awards is five categories … Band of the Year, Song of the Year (Heaven), Album of the Year, Best Rock Band, and Best Bass Player.

The almost exclusively three-part vocal style that sets them apart from other bands seem
s almost happenstance, perhaps stemming from an insignificant lesser vocal capability. It’s never evident on the CD, and the performance shown on the DVD is excellent. But the DVD performance reveals that singing live isn’t one of Henry’s strengths. JoJo has a clear, pleasant voice and style. Ringo, with one exception on the DVD, only sings along with his brothers. It's possible that, consciously or otherwise, the brothers may’ve compensated in the vocals area by developing the three-part vocal style that’s now one of their trademarks.

In another touch of originality in mainstream musical success, they sing one song on the CD entirely in Spanish … and most of the others are a mix of English and Spanish. It’s a nice touch that adds to the bands distinctive style and acts as a reminder of the Garza brother’s roots.

LLB carries on in the tradition of ZZ Top by packing such a full sound into their music that it may never cross anyone’s mind that this is a trio. (The CD, however, includes keys and percussion.)

These guys put on a pretty amazing stage show as well. At one point on the DVD, Henry and JoJo both play their guitars one-handed ... with the hand positioned at the neck. Later, JoJo puts his guitar in front of Henry and then starts playing again … while standing behind him, all while Henry is still playing his own guitar. Near the end of the show both brothers play Henry’s guitar at the same time. Describing it doesn’t do it justice … ya gotta see it!

And, if you like rock n’ roll at all, you’ve gotta hear these guys!

Find out more, hear audio clips, and check out video on the Los Lonely Boys web site at www.loslonelyboys.org.
